As you all probably know by now, I pack my son’s lunch for school every day. He has never eaten the school lunch in his entire school career. For me personally, there are several reasons why making my kids a fresh lunch every day is important to me. I think many people think I do it just because C has diabetes. That may have been one of the big motivators in the beginning, but now especially, it is just the tip of the iceberg as to why I do it. The health factor and trying to raise adventurous eaters are other reasons that top my list.
That’s not to say that it is always easy, or that I wake up each day chomping at the bit to create a balanced lunch. Quit the opposite is true most mornings. But when I zip those lunchboxes each morning I feel great satisfaction knowing I am sending my kids with a healthy lunch and good food to fuel their bodies for the day. To me it is so worth it!
If you’re like me though, you will likely find yourself in a rut at some point and feel like you’re sending the same types of food with your child each day. To help avoid the lunchbox rut, I have rounded up 20 of our favorite kid approved and diabetic friendly school lunch ideas. None of these ideas are sandwiches, either. They’ll get you thinking outside the lunchbox, if you will.
